Chain Maintenance: Cleaning, Lubing and Adjusting Your Final Drive Chain
The most neglected 20-minute job on a motorcycle — and the one most likely to leave you stranded if ignored.
Of every part on a chain-driven motorcycle, the final drive chain probably gets the least love relative to how much it actually needs. A neglected chain doesn't just wear out early — it can snap, and a snapped chain at speed is genuinely dangerous.
Why it matters
A chain running dry and gritty doesn't just make noise. Increased friction wastes engine power, accelerates wear on the sprockets it's paired with, and in the worst case can jump off the sprocket entirely or snap under load. None of this is expensive to prevent — it's mostly just a recurring 15–20 minute job.
How often
As a rough guide, check tension every 300–500 miles and clean and lube every 300–600 miles, more often in wet or gritty conditions, less often if the bike sits mostly on clean dry roads. Get into the habit of doing it after a wet or muddy ride specifically, since that's when grit gets ground into the chain fastest.
Cleaning
With the bike on a stand or paddock stand so the rear wheel spins freely, use a dedicated chain cleaner or light degreaser and a soft brush to work off built-up grime, rotating the wheel to cover the whole loop. Avoid high-pressure jet washing directly at the chain, since it can force water past seals on an O-ring or X-ring chain and wash out the internal grease.
Lubing
Apply chain lube to the inside of the chain (where it meets the sprockets) while slowly rotating the wheel, rather than spraying the outer plates. Do this after a ride while the chain is still slightly warm, ideally, and leave a few minutes before riding to let the lube settle rather than fling straight off.
Checking tension
Check slack at the tightest point of the chain's travel — usually mid-swingarm, with the bike off the stand and someone sitting on it, or consult your handbook for the correct method and figure, since it varies by bike. Too tight strains the gearbox output bearing; too loose risks the chain jumping or slapping.
Signs a chain and sprockets need replacing
- •Sprocket teeth visibly hooked or shark-finned rather than straight
- •Tight spots as you rotate the wheel, where the chain won't sit evenly even after adjustment
- •Visible rust or stiff links that won't flex freely
- •Chain no longer adjustable within the swingarm's normal range
