Engine

The heart of the motorcycle — where fuel and air burn to create the motion that turns the rear wheel.
Piston & Rings
The moving plug inside each cylinder, sealed by thin metal rings so compression doesn't leak away.
Camshaft & Valves
The lobed shaft and spring-loaded valves that let fuel in and exhaust out at exactly the right moment.
Crankcase & Sump
The engine's outer casing and oil reservoir, holding the crankshaft, gearbox and the oil that lubricates it all.
Air Filter
A pleated paper or foam filter that stops dirt and grit reaching the engine's intake.
Spark Plugs
Small igniters threaded into the cylinder head that spark to set the fuel-air mixture alight.
Cam-Chain Tensioner
An internal engine component that controls slack in the timing chain. It is unrelated to the final-drive chain.
Electrical

Stores the electricity that fires the starter motor and runs the electrics when the engine's off.
Alternator / Stator
The on-board generator that keeps the battery topped up while the engine runs.
Starter Motor
The small electric motor that spins the engine over when you press the start button.
Regulator / Rectifier
Converts the alternator's raw AC output into clean, steady DC and stops it overcharging the battery.
ECU (Engine Control Unit)
The onboard computer that manages fuelling, ignition timing and, on modern bikes, rider aids.
Fuel & Delivery

Stores the petrol until the engine needs it, usually sitting above the engine on most bikes.
Fuel Pump
Pushes fuel from the tank to the injectors at the pressure they need to spray properly.
Fuel Injectors
Spray a fine, precisely-timed mist of petrol into the intake tract or cylinder.
Carburettor
The mechanical mixer that blends fuel and air by vacuum alone, common on older and simpler bikes.
Throttle Body
The valve that controls exactly how much air reaches the engine when you twist the throttle.
Exhaust

The pipes that carry hot exhaust gas away from each cylinder before it reaches the silencer.
Silencer (Can)
The rear section of the exhaust that quietens the engine note and often shapes the bike's sound.
Catalytic Converter
A honeycomb filter that chemically cleans harmful gases out of the exhaust before they leave the bike.
Oxygen (O2) Sensor
Measures leftover oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can fine-tune the fuel mixture.
Drivetrain & Transmission

Connects and disconnects engine power from the gearbox so you can change gear and pull away smoothly.
Gearbox / Transmission
Lets the engine spin at its happy speed no matter how fast the bike is actually travelling.
Final Drive Chain & Sprockets
The chain and toothed sprockets that carry final drive from the gearbox to the rear wheel.
Belt Final Drive
A toothed rubber belt used instead of a chain on some cruisers and scooters — quieter and lower maintenance.
Shaft Final Drive
A drive shaft and bevel gears that carry power to the rear wheel — no chain or belt at all.
Chain Adjusters, Sliders and Cam-Chain Tensioners

Drive-Chain Adjusters
The adjusters used to set final-drive chain slack, commonly located around the rear axle. Procedures and correct slack figures are model-specific.
Chain Slider / Guide
A sacrificial wear component that guides the final-drive chain and protects the swingarm and surrounding parts. It does not tension the chain.
Brakes

The friction material that clamps onto the disc to slow the bike when you squeeze the lever.
Brake Discs
The metal rotor your brake pads clamp onto — the actual friction surface that does the stopping.
Brake Calipers
The hydraulic clamp bolted over the disc that squeezes the pads together when you brake.
Master Cylinder
The pump at the lever that turns your hand or foot movement into hydraulic braking pressure.
Brake Lines
The hoses or hard pipes that carry pressurised brake fluid from the master cylinder to each caliper.
Brake Fluid
The hydraulic fluid that transmits lever and pedal pressure through to the calipers.
Suspension

The two tubes up front that absorb bumps and keep the front wheel in contact with the road.
Rear Shock (Monoshock)
The single spring-and-damper unit that controls how the rear wheel moves over bumps.
Swingarm
The pivoted arm that holds the rear wheel and lets it move up and down with the suspension.
Steering Head Bearings
The bearings that let the forks and handlebars pivot smoothly for steering.
Fork Seals
The rubber seals that keep fork oil in and dirt out where the fork tubes slide.
Suspension Linkage
The rocker arms and rods connecting the swingarm to the rear shock, tuning how the suspension feels.

Rider Safety Tech

ABS helps prevent a wheel from locking during braking. This can support stability and reduce the risk of a fall, but it cannot overcome excessive speed, poor tyre grip or every loss-of-control situation.
Traction Control
A rider aid that helps manage excessive driven-wheel spin by reducing engine torque when the system detects conditions associated with lost traction.
Quickshifter
Helps the rider change gear without using the clutch lever in specified conditions. Capabilities and operating ranges vary by motorcycle.
Slipper & Assist Clutch
Helps reduce destabilising back-torque during abrupt downshifts, lowering the risk of rear-wheel hop or lock. Behaviour varies by motorcycle.
Ride Modes
Selectable presets that adjust a manufacturer-defined combination of rider-assist and power-delivery systems. Available modes and affected systems vary by motorcycle.
Cornering ABS
A rider aid that adjusts ABS brake-pressure control according to the motorcycle's calculated dynamic state, using an IMU alongside wheel-speed and braking data.
Wheelie Control / Anti-Lift
A rider aid that reduces engine output when the system detects front-wheel lift beyond a manufacturer-calibrated or rider-selected intervention level.
Electric Motorcycles

The high-voltage pack that stores the energy propelling an electric motorcycle. It is distinct from the low-voltage auxiliary battery used for lights and electronics.
Electric Motor
Converts electrical energy into mechanical torque to drive the rear wheel. Many electric motorcycles use a single-speed reduction drive, though drivetrain arrangements vary.
Motor Controller / Inverter
Manages requested torque and power flow between the battery and motor. On AC-motor systems an inverter also converts battery DC into controlled multi-phase power; both functions may share one unit.
On-board Charger
Converts incoming AC electricity into controlled DC power for the traction battery.
