What are Spoked Wheels & Rims?

Traditional wire-spoked wheels — flexible, repairable, and common on adventure and classic bikes.

In plain English

A spoked wheel uses individual steel spokes tensioned between a central hub and an outer rim, giving a degree of flex that suits rough or unpredictable surfaces well.

A simple analogy

Like a tensioned drum skin, held taut by dozens of individual spokes rather than one solid disc.

How it works

Each spoke is tensioned to pull the rim true and centred around the hub; if one spoke loosens, the wheel can go slightly out of true. Because individual spokes can be replaced and rims are relatively tolerant of minor impacts, spoked wheels are popular for off-road and adventure riding.

Signs of trouble

  • Wobble or wheel running visibly untrue
  • Loose or rattling spokes when tapped
  • Rust or corrosion at spoke nipples
  • Difficulty holding tyre pressure on tubeless spoked rims
