What are Brake Calipers?
The hydraulic clamp bolted over the disc that squeezes the pads together when you brake.

Inside the caliper, one or more pistons push the brake pads against the disc whenever hydraulic pressure rises. Sports bikes often use multi-piston, radially-mounted calipers for extra stopping power and feel.

How it works
Fluid pressure from the master cylinder pushes on small pistons inside the caliper, which press the pads against the disc. Seals keep the fluid contained while letting the pistons move smoothly; when those seals wear or the pistons stick, braking becomes uneven or weak.
