What is a Clutch?

The clutch uses a stack of friction plates to link the spinning engine to the gearbox. Squeeze the lever and the plates separate, momentarily disconnecting drive so you can shift gear or come to a stop.

How it works
Springs clamp a stack of friction and steel plates together, transmitting engine power to the gearbox input shaft. Pulling the clutch lever draws a pushrod or cable that compresses those springs, separating the plates and cutting drive. Many modern bikes add a slipper function that lets the clutch slip on aggressive downshifts to stop the rear wheel locking.
