What is a Slipper & Assist Clutch?

Under hard braking and rapid downshifts, engine braking can momentarily overpower rear wheel grip. A slipper clutch allows a controlled amount of slip in that situation, preventing the rear wheel from locking or hopping.

How it works
Under normal drive, ramped plates within the clutch lock together as usual. But when the gearbox tries to spin the engine faster than it wants to go, as happens on an aggressive downshift, those ramps force the plates apart slightly, reducing clamping force and allowing brief, controlled slip.
Signs of trouble
