Traction control is a rider aid, not a substitute for grip. It helps manage excessive driven-wheel spin by reducing engine torque when the system detects conditions associated with lost traction. It works within physical and model-specific limits and cannot prevent every slide.
How it works
Basic traction-control systems compare front- and rear-wheel speeds to estimate driven-wheel slip. More advanced systems combine that with data from an inertial measurement unit (IMU), throttle position, gear, engine speed and other inputs. When the system detects conditions associated with lost traction, it reduces engine torque — through throttle adjustment, ignition timing changes, fuel delivery changes, or a combination — and hands control back once the situation stabilises. Many motorcycles offer several settings that deliberately allow different amounts of wheelspin, from strong intervention to very permissive modes.
Signs of trouble

What it helps with

What it cannot do

- •It operates only within physical and model-specific limits.
What normal intervention may feel like
- •A brief flat spot or softening of engine response when the throttle is opened aggressively.
- •A short flash of the traction-control indicator on the dash.
- •Slightly delayed or smoothed acceleration on wet, cold or loose surfaces.
What the rider should do
- •Ride to the conditions, not to the system.
- •Choose an intervention level appropriate for the road, weather and rider experience.
- •Never deliberately provoke wheelspin to 'test' the system.
- •Investigate persistent warning lights or fault messages with a qualified motorcycle technician.
How traction control varies between motorcycles

- •Fixed intervention vs. multiple rider-selectable levels or ride modes.
