"Chain tensioner" is a phrase that gets used loosely for several very different parts. This overview page separates them so you can identify which component your motorcycle actually has, and which detail page to read next. The three components covered here are the drive-chain adjuster, the chain slider or guide, and the cam-chain tensioner. Each sits in a different place, does a different job, and has its own warning signs.

  • Drive-chain adjusters set final-drive chain slack by changing rear-wheel position or another model-specific system.
  • A chain slider or guide helps guide the final-drive chain and protects nearby components such as the swingarm.
  • A cam-chain tensioner acts on the engine's internal timing chain — it is not the same part as the other two.

How it works

Drive-chain adjusters set final-drive chain slack, typically by changing the rear-wheel position in the swingarm, or by using another model-specific adjustment system. A chain slider or guide helps guide the final-drive chain and protects nearby components such as the swingarm — it is a wear part, not a tensioning device. A cam-chain tensioner acts on the engine's internal timing chain, keeping it snug as it wears. It is inside the engine, unrelated to the final-drive chain.

What affects the repair?

  • Calibration / coding: some parts require post-fit calibration, coding or a road test, which adds labour time.
