What is an On-board Charger?
Converts incoming AC electricity into controlled DC power for the traction battery.

In plain English
The on-board charger takes alternating current from the supply (domestic outlet, dedicated home charge point or public AC point) and turns it into a controlled DC current that the traction battery can accept. Connector types, supported supplies and maximum charge rates vary by motorcycle.

How it works
AC from the supply enters the on-board charger, which rectifies and regulates it into a DC output. Throughout the charge the charger and battery-management system communicate to control current, voltage and temperature, and to taper the rate as the pack approaches full. Some motorcycles support charging from a domestic outlet through an appropriate cable or EVSE; others require a dedicated home or public charge point. Where the motorcycle supports DC rapid charging, the DC path normally bypasses the on-board AC charger and feeds the pack directly through separate hardware.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Charging noticeably slower than expected for the supply and motorcycle
- ⚠Charging refusing to start, or stopping early with a fault code
- ⚠Warning light referring to charging or the high-voltage system
- ⚠Unexpected behaviour when moving between different AC supplies or cables
AC and DC charging paths
- •AC charging uses the on-board charger to convert mains AC into DC for the pack; rate is limited by the charger, motorcycle and supply.
- •DC rapid charging (where supported) supplies DC directly to the pack and normally bypasses the on-board AC charger.
- •Connector types and supported supplies vary — always follow the handbook and use approved cables or EVSE.
A warm charger is often normal
The on-board charger can run warm during a normal charge. Do not touch inaccessible high-voltage components to judge temperature or diagnose a fault.
High-voltage safety
These are high-voltage components. Do not open, disconnect, probe or attempt internal repairs. Inspection and repair require manufacturer procedures, appropriate isolation and a suitably qualified technician.
What affects the repair?

- •Diagnosis: intermittent or system-wide faults may need dealer-level tools before the actual part can be identified.
- •Accessibility: some parts are quick to reach; others require significant fairing, tank or engine-cover removal.
- •Model differences: prices and labour times vary widely between manufacturers and specification levels.
- •New vs used: a genuine OEM part fitted at a franchised dealer costs more than a serviceable used or aftermarket part.
- •Calibration / coding: some parts require post-fit calibration, coding or a road test, which adds labour time.
