What is a Traction Battery?
The large high-voltage battery pack that stores the energy powering an electric motorcycle.
Simplified animation — not to scale.
In plain English
Unlike the small 12V battery on a petrol bike, the traction battery is a substantial pack of lithium cells that stores all the energy needed to actually move the bike, and is by far the most expensive single component on an electric motorcycle.
“Think of it as the electric bike's entire fuel tank and engine's stored energy, combined into one sealed unit.”
How it works
Individual lithium cells are grouped into modules and managed by a battery management system that balances charge across cells, monitors temperature, and protects against over-charging or over-discharging. Capacity naturally degrades gradually over hundreds of charge cycles, similar to a phone battery but on a much larger scale.
Signs of trouble
- ⚠Noticeably reduced range compared to when new
- ⚠Charging taking longer or stopping early
- ⚠Battery management warning light
- ⚠Uneven power delivery or unexpected power cuts
