What is a Rear Shock (Monoshock)?
The single spring-and-damper unit that controls how the rear wheel moves over bumps.

Most modern bikes use a single rear shock working through the swingarm, combining a spring to support weight with hydraulic damping to control how quickly that spring compresses and rebounds.

How it works
As the rear wheel hits a bump, the swingarm pivots and compresses the shock's spring. Oil forced through internal valving damps that compression and the subsequent rebound, keeping the tyre planted rather than letting the bike bounce uncontrollably. Higher-spec shocks add adjustable compression and rebound damping on top of preload.
