Sat inside the frame's steering head, these bearings let the entire front end — forks, wheel, handlebars — pivot side to side for steering, while still supporting the bike's weight and impacts through the front wheel.

How it works
Tapered roller or ball bearings sit between the steering stem and the frame's head tube, allowing smooth rotation under load. Correct bearing preload matters — too loose and the steering feels vague or notchy, too tight and it becomes heavy and resistant to turn.
