What is a Starter Motor?

A powerful but compact electric motor that engages briefly with the engine to turn it over fast enough to fire up, then disengages once the engine's running under its own power.

How it works
Pressing the starter button sends battery current through a solenoid, which mechanically engages a small gear with the engine's flywheel or clutch basket and spins the motor. Once the engine fires, the gear disengages automatically so it isn't driven the other way.
Signs of trouble

- ⚠Slow, labouring crank even with a healthy battery
